Music is a gateway to the soul, a ladder to the higher self...

Music enriches lives, and – careers:

How many times you discovered that another successful, often professional person you admire is at the same time good musician - pianist, violinist? Did you know that brilliant Albert Einstein himself was a fine musician, fascinated with the power, the beauty and the intricacy of music throughout his life?

Did you know that the very best engineers, scientists and technical designers in the Silicon Valley industry are, nearly without exception, practicing musicians? Could that be just a coincidence?

For centuries people knew about the power and the importance of music, however the study of music was reserved for the privileged few. For most of the 20th century, a strong music program was considered to be an important part of a well-balanced education. With the advancement of bio-, neuro- & medical science it is clear that it is MUSIC that lays the foundation for later academic and career success.                         (Back to top)

Solid and ongoing musical training requires and improves self-discipline, concentration, problem-solving, attention; teaches the law of particles, working habits, learning strategies; builds creativity, poise, self-confidence, self-esteem, coordination, self-efficacy. In fact, mounting evidence repeatedly confirms that the study of music has measurable and lasting positive health, developmental, social and academic benefits.

The foundation of the Forte Academy of Music is our belief that music has life enhancing powers. We know  that everyone is enriched through the study of music in terms of personal satisfaction, enhanced  creativity and self-expression and increased awareness and self-confidence. Music is a proven stress-reliever and simply is a "remedy for heart and mind". We are deep believers in music's life affirming qualities.

Welcome...

 Forte Academy of Music!

"Boris Hrovat Piano Studio" was established shortly after Boris and his family immigrated to Canada in January 1994. The Same year Boris received his recognition and certification by the Royal Conservatory of Music. "Following the dream" in 1997 Boris, joined by his wife Vesna, opened the Clarkson Music Centre, where the initial Piano Studio grew into School – formerly known as Clarkson/Hrovat School of Music, that was operating in the modest basement facility. Focused on the quality, private music instructions, provided by a growing number of professional music teachers, the school has quickly established itself as a highly successful and demanded Royal Conservatory of Music exam preparation centre, outgrowing the space availability. In order to accommodate continuous new student registrations, and improve and enhance the learning environment, in September 2001 the School moved into a spacious, bright and neat teaching area, on the second floor, above the piano store – a move adored by all - teachers, students and their parents. At the same time, the school was renamed Forte Academy of Music – division of Clarkson Music Centre. Entering our 9th academic year, and 6th at the present location, we, at FORTE Academy of Music feel extremely fortunate to experience a continued growth in the student enrollment, mostly through word of mouth. And even in the post-September 2001 economic and other turbulence that has shaken  the strongest, we have experienced consistent growth that has created new job positions: today there are 11 of us that work at Clarkson Music & Forte Academy of Music! We know that all of this would not be possible without the continued and tremendous support of the Clarkson, Lorne Park, Port Credit and east Oakville communities, and we strive to continuously improve the work in the field we like most: MUSIC! Thank you all for believing in us, and for giving us the opportunity to share the beauty, the joy of music and music making with you! If you could only know how happy we are to have all of you  here, and to have the priv ilege of being involved in the development of your musical skills ... now at the... Forte Academy of Music!

It’s an image engraved on our cultural memory, right next to skate keys and hula hoops: the child at the piano, forced to practice scales while friends play ball outside. Today, with the advent of new approaches, new teaching methods and new attitudes, that's all changed. According to the National Piano Foundation, USA , a few simple guidelines will heighten the fun of piano instruction and help you make sure your child gets the most out of it.

In fact, learning to play the piano is one of the most rewarding activities a child can accomplish. A child can have as much fun during the learning process as an accomplished pianist has in performance.

An Important Guidelines

Parents should begin by deciding when to start a child's piano instruction. Six or seven is an average age, but kids can start earlier or later--and, as millions of adult piano students can attest, it's never too late to begin. Pay attention to your child's interest in music, attention span and eagerness to learn for indications of when the time is right.

Choosing a teacher is an important step, so don't let cost and convenience be the sole factors. While home-run studio is a traditional way to take lessons, check the other options such as established school of music. There you should be able to have more choices re the program, teachers, live-performance opportunities and more. Be aware, however, that the size of premises means very little. Most large schools today are focused on providing profitable group classes that are well marketed as "fun" and provide a very small chance to develop any significant level of skill . However, there is nothing like a one-on-one, quality, private music lesson. Ask  to see the lesson plan for the first few months; are lessons in group or private format; even if you're not a musician, you'll be able to tell if the program contains clear progress goals. Some very young kids (3-6 years) may respond well to introductory group lessons. Individual instruction is clearly the best choice for study of any musical instrument. Find out if program is recognized nationally. Ask about the school credits: You want to make a wise educational investment both musically and financially. Finally, evaluate the teacher's personality, and how well you think he or she will get along with your child. When it's lesson time, the rapport between student and teacher can make the time fly--or crawl.

Whether or not you play the piano, there's a lot you can contribute to your child's enjoyment and success. Show enthusiasm for the process, and sit in on a lesson if the teacher feels it's appropriate. Be available, whether it's for giving pointers, listening appreciatively to what your child has learned, or even just for driving to lessons. Finally, be the grown-up and provide structure. Young children shouldn't decide whether or when to practice the piano, any more than they should decide their own bedtimes. And never let children practice when they're tired; doing it well requires the ability to concentrate. If you make it clear what you expect from your child, then contribute your own cheerful, patient involvement, the results will amaze you.

Provide a good environment for your child's lessons. Make sure not only to have a well-tuned piano with a properly sized bench, but also a quiet room, good lighting, and freedom from distractions such as television, radio and other people's activities. Make sure other members of the family know and respect how important your child's piano time is.

If there's enough time, you should also try to schedule lessons and practice sessions so that your child doesn't miss out on other activities they enjoy. Kids need to do karate, play ball too, and they'll have more fun at the piano if they get to do both.

Every child is an individual, so create expectations that conform to your child's abilities and interests. See to it that he or she has a chance to play fun music, pieces that hold interest, in addition to the classical assignments that are necessary for progress. Children should be encouraged to make music their own: they shouldn't feel as if they have to play as well as their favorite stars on television, music videos or CDs. By playing at their own pace, going slowly at first over difficult parts to build up muscle memory, they'll be on the road to true mastery.

Finally, don't impose unrealistic long-term goals. Not every kid in the schoolyard is going to be a professional athlete, and not every kid taking piano lessons is going to play at Carnegie Hall. Some kids will indeed become virtuosos, but all those non-musical benefits of study of music - perseverance, concentration, coordination, learning strategies, working habits, aesthetic perception, poise, self-esteem and more will be a true gift for SUCCESS in LIFE! And remember, gift of music lasts a lifetime!

Many adults decide to start learning the piano: It's okay for the pure enjoyment of the piano to be your only reason for learning.

A Message...
Piano Gives: KEYS TO SUCCESS

Piano – "A marvel of human ingenuity with delicate soul" – brings sophistication and warmth to your home, a moment to your family life, and in the process creates treasured, lifelong memories. But the piano experience offers even more, as studies have proven that children can dramatically improve their reasoning abilities by taking piano lessons. Research also shows that children who study music demonstrate superior reading skills, enhanced math abilities, higher levels of creativity and, accordingly - better grades. But even more so, the study of music – piano training in particular- produces significant non-musical benefits – intellectual, academic, behavioral, social and - health benefits. Does it all come at once? No - These positive attributes come not all at once, but over the years and years of consistent lessons in a supportive environment. Contrary to that which is taught to our children in the half-hour TV show , the most worthwhile accomplishments in life take months, years of concentrated effort. Through piano lessons, the student learns discipline, learning strategies, aesthetic perception, coordination, patience, perseverance, and an array of other intangible benefits. Benefits only PIANO can give…

Forte Academy of Music proudly offering:

"Affordable excellence inspired by family tradition"

Raised in a musical family, and living in a country with exceptionally rich musical tradition, just steps away from major European musical mega-cities, Boris was first introduced to piano in Zagreb, Croatia, by his grandfather, Franc - church organist, choir director, teacher and pianist, a true baroque repertoire lover. Franc Hrovat has performed and taught in his native Slovenia, Croatia, Hungary, Italy, Austria, and from 1903 to 1918 in Chicago,Illinois, USA.  To this day Boris remembers his passionate performances of J.S. Bach’s works. Boris' grandmothers both played piano and sang. Boris’s father, a physician, despite his early death, is remembered as a passionate bandoneon virtuoso and multilingual vocalist, and his brother, Raymond, Boris’ late uncle, was  a conductor, arranger and respected music professor. His son, Boris’s cousin Dr.Vladimir Hrovat (Mus.PhD), National Philharmonic Orchestra violinist, a Concert-Master, is a international recording artist, conductor, pianist and educator in demand. Both Boris’s mother and her sister played and taught piano and Boris especially credits them for all the input, coaching, support and the necessary encouragement on his path from his early beginnings to the fuller understanding of the "power of music". His aunt Lillian is a performance professor, concert pianist, recording artist and author of many recognized performance-related publications, and his mother is a retired piano and music teacher, and early childhood music education specialist. Boris remains grateful to his mother for instilling in him the seeds of creative exploration, ideals and values towards the excellence in music and in life, with strong emphasis on the values of honesty, trust, perseverance, friendship and above all – family.

Music is the art of thinking in sounds…

Boris Hrovat & Music - The Profile

Boris was introduced to the piano in his home, but his mother believed that school-studio environment was best, and his studies continued at the State School of Music followed by the extensive course of study offered at the State Conservatory of Music. The typical day for Boris, "double" full-time student, for years, would start in the morning with the primary (or, later, secondary school) and would continue in the afternoon at the Music School (or, later at the Conservatory). There, the program included serious piano study (works by Mozart, Bach, Haydn, Handel, Brahms Debussy Beethoven, Tchaikowsky, Chopin, Rachmanninof and many more) as well as a comprehensive curriculum with theory, solfege, harmony, counterpoint, forms, history, conducting, arranging, pedagogy & methodology to name a few. Such a condensed daily schedule made Boris learn from an early age, first hand, time-management skills. Over the course of many years, Boris studied under many prominent teachers of the country, and was particularly fortunate to study with Prof. Angelina Pap, master instructor, university performance professor, examiner, adjudicator that has studied, taught and  performed in Russia, France, Ukraine, Poland, Chech Republic, Italy, Austria, Germany,  and more...  Professor Pap is an international concert artist and brilliant pedagogue that has devoted her life to music and the art of teaching the piano – performance, style and interpretation. She has produced many world-class concert pianists that perform, record and teach in many European countries, in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, USA & Canada. To this day, Boris keeps ties with his favorite teacher, mentor and friend Prof. Pap – who is currently a dean of the University Music School. (Note: On the photo - Boris, Vesna and children, in Sept. 2001 visiting Prof. Pap in her studio, were Boris studied for many years). Besides exams, his studies were enriched through numerous provincial, federal and international festivals, concerts and competitions. Admittedly a very shy child - a firm believer in "the power of performance" -today Boris credits all those challenging performances before the audience for not only helping him develop his musicianship, but self-esteem, poise and self-confidence, well needed in time to come. On the spontaneous request of one of his instructors, Boris started offering piano lessons when he was barely 16 – and does it until today!

He graduated with the performer’s as well as the teacher’s First Class Honours With Dist. Diploma,  received his professional designation at the age of 19 and the highest award - Federal Ministry of Education’s Golden Medal. At that point he decided not to continue the concert-pianist route and to rather keep music as his passion. He pursued medical/dental study, later becoming a licensed dental surgeon. For Boris, the extensive medical school training that included pre-clinical and, later, clinical study, just re-confirmed the remarkable impact of music on a child's development as well as an outlet for creativity, energy and emotions – and to the well-being of every individual. However, Prof. Pap told him: "Boris, music is under your skin, and one way or the another it is going to stay with you for the rest of your life!"

Boris’ university years were filled with – music: He continued private studies with distinguished artists: Dr. Miroslav Maraus, composer, producer, arranger - student of the famous Henry Mancini; and (with) Prof. Milas Nikolich , retired international recording artist, conductor, pianist- colleague and arranger for the legendary Stephane Grapelli. Boris praises those studies as absolutely remarkable, priceless experience, that has offered him an in-depth, extraordinary approach to musical thinking, creative exploration…towards "musical freedom" and real enjoyment of the music by bringing the music to others… He liked live performance and experienced it all: from local bars, taverns, restaurants, clubs, pubs…to more and more attractive venues, over time became a featured performer at many special events- gala-parties, fashion shows, with frequent live radio and TV performances and recording sessions. He performed in some of the most prestigious former Yugoslavia’s venues, exclusive diplomatic resort "Brioni"; for the 1984 Olympics entertained distinguished guests – IOC members, athletes, celebrities (including Kirk Douglas and crew, John Denver & many more) as well as in Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Germany, Poland & London, England. He became attracted by technology - and implemented the use of an electronic keyboard, performed as one-man-band and learned the practical possibilities of advanced MIDI/sequencing applications and digital orchestrations. Boris feels that years of live performing, on an array of different pianos and keyboards have offered him extensive, in-depth understanding of the tonal and mechanical performance of the piano, assisting him in today’s piano aspect of his business.

However, with the "dark clouds coming" and the brake-up of the country, Boris with his wife Vesna and small son, immigrated to Canada in 1994.

Boris likes to say that music has helped him quickly rebuild his life, and his joyful musical path - teaching and performing has continued, now in Canada, best confirming the quality of the skill and knowledge Boris brought to Canada as well as the possibilities and universality of music. Since 1994, Boris  has performed, taught and trained tirelessly in Canada and US, while keeping strong music-related ties with German, Austrian, Belgian, Italian, Slovenian and Croatian organizations and individuals. Since arrival in Canada, he has worked with and/or performed at the Royal Conservatory of Music; CTV; The Faculty of Music U of T; ORMT-association; Steinway & Sons Gallery Toronto; S & S World Headquarters, & Steinway Hall, NYC, NY, to name a few. However Boris admits to having his heart set on the Clarkson Piano Centre & Forte Academy of Music. Assisted by his devoted wife, Vesna, (and supported by their children David and Laura, both FORTE students), Boris with his very own  family business remains determined to deliver joy of MUSIC to your family home - either in the form of a fine piano, music lesson or …just friendly MUSICAL advice! (Photo showing Boris with Henry Z. Steinway, Steinway & Sons Concert & Artist Department, Steinway Hall, 57th Avenue, The New York City)

The primary goal of the Forte Academy of Music Approach is to develop an interest, love and appreciation for music that is supported by understanding and direct musical experience. The most important task for the teacher is to teach music in such a way that it is not a torture but a joy for the pupil and instill a thirst for finer music, a thirst which will last for lifetime.

Did You Know?

According to statistics, 1 out of 20000 kids involved in hockey practice at childhood reaches professional top level, with all the benefits of the professional sport. About 1% of young hockey players remain active members of various non-pro teams, and in total some 6% of all continue to periodically play with friends after the age of 28!

Statistics also show that 9 out of 10 piano students that reach Gr.9 RCM use their skills and knowledge to teach!
10 out of 10 either professionally perform or teach!

For every adult that plays the piano, there are 200 others who wish they could do the same. (According to the Gallup Survey 2000 )

Practical thoughts on PRACTICING an instrument:

Playing an instrument on a daily basis helps students retain their hard-earned knowledge of the language of music and creates a happy habit of making music. A few good focused practice sessions a week may be sufficient provided your child plays everyday (even 10, 15 minutes) and maintains that important, muscle development in their fingers.

Contrary to that which is taught to our children in the half-hour T.V. shows, life challenges are NOT resolved in half an hour. The most worthwhile accomplishments in life take weeks, months even years of concentrated effort. One of the greatest benefits of learning to play the piano - even beyond the actual enjoyment of the music itself - is learning by experience to comprehend the "Law of Particles." If one works a little every day on any given task, one moves closer to its completion every day.

Small daily efforts do amount to great long-term accomplishments whether learning a new language or a skill, creating a home, raising children or any worthwhile endeavor. Be sure to celebrate seemingly small accomplishments with a surprise gift or time alone with you!

A Word About Our Approach:

Curriculum & curriculum delivery:

The traditional piano lesson taken today is usually a one half-hour lesson during which the student concentrates on learning technique, repertoire and studies, with exams taking place annually. The addition of theory lessons at about 4th or 5th year of study is a routine scenario. While we think that none of these are wrong, or even undesirable, the package is incomplete. Furthermore, when getting a student that was already taking lessons elsewhere, we often discover a complete absence of necessary sight-reading & ear-training tuition. No wonder why so many students get confused, discouraged and lose interest, over time. Therefore our curriculum addresses the deficiencies in the traditional piano lesson and incorporates from the very beginning: technical requirements; repertoire; the essentials of improvisation: necessary music theory basics, ear-training and sight-reading. With this more rounded approach, our students have enjoyed higher exam marks, better skill and much more fun! In curriculum delivery the teacher is obviously a post of this process: Our teachers are carefully selected, caring professionals - determined to deliver the described curriculum at its very best.

Piano training has lasting rewards

A piano adds more than just sophistication to a home

There is an undeniably strong correlation between music education and the development of skills that children need to become successful in life!  Self-discipline, patience, sensitivity, coordination, the ability to memorize and concentrate are all enhanced by the study of music.  These skills will follow your child on whatever path he or she chooses in life!  YOU have the chance now to introduce a formative influence that may be second only to the love you give your child.  If you’re looking  for a way to provide  your child  with a source  of lifelong joy, satisfaction and accomplishment, childhood music education is THE BEST first step!

And, THE PIANO is THE BEST first instrument.  No other single instrument matches the piano for its broad application of musical concepts!  Even if later your child chooses to play another instrument, the melody, rhythm and sense of harmony acquired with piano education will pay handsomely!!!  Repeatedly, medical and child development experts document that piano training has a direct effect on the development of the brain’s neural circuitry, actually improving intellectual development.  It has long been known that musically educated children develop skills they carry into adulthood.  It is amazing how many professionals, particularly from scientific and medical communities (including founder and owner of the Forte Academy of Music himself) are so often well trained and skilled pianists/musicians.  Could this be just a  ... coincidence?

As your child’s musical education continues and extends to taking exams, playing in recitals or in competitions, one reward is the special camaraderie that often blooms between young musicians.  this can often lead to friendships that last for years to come.  THE PIANO can also be a source of stability in the turbulent teenage years.  And as an adult, the poise and self-assurance developed by playing and performing the piano has a very tangible value in social and business worlds!  Of course, there is also the chance that your child  has an exceptional musical talent, in which case a whole world of possibilities - both personal and professional can be recognized and nurtured!

Fundamental Objectives of the Forte Academy of Music

    • As a professional music educator and Faculty Member of the Forte Academy of Music, to develop human potential in a supportive, enjoyable environment through high quality, comprehensive musical education.
    • To exhibit integrity and professionalism, and to support students as they grow in
      their discipline

the Forte Academy of Music and to the community as a whole
      .

MISSION STATEMENT

"Musical training is a more potent instrument than any other, because rhythm and harmony find their way into the inward places of the soul..."
                                                                                                                     Plato

At the Forte Academy of Music we trust that a good musical education program is a well-designed and successfully conducted interaction among student-teacher-parent(s) and instrument.

Our goal is to form a well-rounded, versatile, creative and "independent" musician through our unique, comprehensive, progressive, yet enjoyable teaching techniques.  We blend the best of proven classical pedagogical methods and programs with a SPECTRUM of the latest educational developments as well as scientific and technological advances.

We know that a solid classical musical training is absolutely SUPERB and ESSENTIAL for further development of any particular style of  "modern music" such as jazz, pop, etc.  Therefore, it is no coincidence that the world's most successful "modern music" artists are initially classically trained (i.e. Elton John, David Foster, Oscar Peterson...).

In making a decision about the main focus of our curriculum, we have not opted for the profitable group classes.  Instead, and following the path of the world's most respected musical educational institutions, we have chosen PRIVATE LESSONS.  Only by taking PRIVATE LESSONS, will a student receive the greatest individual attention and customized lesson plan tailored to the personal rate of progress.

Forte Academy of Music Faculty Members have formed a dynamic team of caring professionals, highly motivated and
COMMITTED TO DELIVER AN EXCELLENCE IN MUSIC EDUCATION.

CLASSICAL TRAINING MEANS - POPULAR TUNES ARE FORBIDDEN?  NO WAY AT THE Forte Academy of Music & ROYAL CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC CURRICULUM!!!

We are extremely pleased to announce the introduction of a Popular Selection List for EXAMINATION PURPOSES, as well as for fun!  The popular selection list is a compilation of non-classical pieces carefully selected to suit each grade level. RCM examination candidates in grades 3 to 9 will have the option of  substituting   a piece chosen from the Popular Selection List with one study in these grades.

Each Popular Selection List piece addresses the musical and/or technical aspects of playing the piano relevant to the level and similar to a study while providing the fun of performing current melodies.  Ranging from movie themes to pop tunes, and ragtime to jazz standards, these pieces are also suitable for a performance - in recitals, for friends and for family.

What a fun way of supporting the most valuable classical piano study; by providing the opportunity to play carefully arranged and challenging popular piano pieces.

RECITALS

Forte Academy of Music holds end-of-semester, semi-annual recitals.  We strongly advise ALL our students to participate, because performance in front of an audience is a motivating and inspiring component of a well-designed musical educational program.  Recitals are a fun and completely non-competitive opportunity to share talent & knowledge while building self-confidence, self-esteem and discipline.

Our recitals are held at an attractive recital facility, on the professional-quality, specially prepared instrument(s) and enriched with "surprise guest-artist(s)".  Our End-Of-Semester Recitals (two per academic year) have become a real CELEBRATION of Learning that promotes and celebrates the EFFORT and ACHIEVEMENT of Our Students, Family and Forte Academy of Music.

Summer recital - end of 2002/2003 Academic Year  will be held on Saturday, June 14, 200
3.

TIMES AND LESSON DURATION

Lessons are arranged at a time convenient for both student and teacher.  We teach Monday to Friday, 10:30 AM to 8:30 PM, and Saturday 9:00 AM to 6:00 PM.  Lessons are minimum 30 minutes long.  We also offer lessons 45 or 60 minutes long.

Note: A 30-minute private lesson is an adequate choice for the student at the beginner level.  However, it has been proven that the BEST results are achieved by receiving a minimum 45-minute long private-lesson. For all students enrolled in The Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum, a minimum 45-minute long lesson is an absolute necessity, and our strong recommendation.

PROGRESS REPORTS

Parents play a vital role in the learning process, and the student's musical education must be a PARTNERSHIP between parents, student and teacher.  At the end of every semester, part of the last lesson, usually 10 to 15 minutes in length, is reserved for the PROGRESS REPORT.  This direct parent(s)-student-teacher meeting provides both the student and the parents with an overview of their progress throughout the semester, while giving the student a sense of accomplishment! Also, a written "Progress Report Card" will be given to students and parents at the same time.

Under the teacher's guidance, parents will learn the significance of their own role in the musical education of their child, and for the teacher, the Progress Report shows that WE HAVE THE BEST interests of the student at heart.

THE INSTRUCTION IN MUSIC & THE ONTARIO EDUCATION ACT

Lessons during school hours: "A child is excused from attendance at school if he/she is absent from school for the purpose of receiving instructions in music and the period of absence does not exceed one  half-day in any week".

(Ontario education Act, 1980, volume 2, page 802)

SECONDARY SCHOOL MUSIC CREDITS

Highly acclaimed, national, coast-to-coast, system of evaluation RCM examinations are accepted as credits towards the secondary school graduation diplomas in many jurisdictions.  Theory and practical examination grades can be used as a credit towards an Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma.  The grade 8 Practical Exam and the Grade 2 Rudiments Exam are the equivalent of one non-O.A.C. credit.  The grade 9 Practical Exam and the Grade 3 Harmony Exam are equivalent to one O.A.C. credit.

We advise that students and parents confirm this with their school guidance counselor.

Note to our students and parents:

We are committed to providing the highest possible quality of lessons to all our students. If, however, the student is not able to practice on a daily basis using an adequate instrument, we are not responsible for the results.  All days, times and teachers are subject to change.  The Forte Academy of Music reserves the right to cancel or combine classes due to insufficient enrollment or extraordinary circumstances.
