From recent issue of USA TODAY: "Musical training can be a big help in getting to the top of business and politics, according to most congressmen and Chief Executive Officers of Fortune 500 companies.  Ninety three percent of more than 1,000 CEO's and congressmen interviewed during this survey said playing a musical instrument as a child helped them develop "character and leadership skills."

A recent Rockefeller Foundation Study concluded that students seriously trained in music (for minimum of 10 years) have the highest rate of admittance to medical schools, followed by biochemistry and the humanities.

A comprehensive series of skill tests were run on 5,154 fifth graders in 75 of the Boston, MA elementary schools.  In EVERY SINGLE TEST AREA, kids who were learning to play a musical instrument received higher marks than their classmates.  And, the longer the school children had been in the instrumental programs, the higher they scored

The American Music Conference reports that music-makers are more likely to go on to college and other higher education than non-music music makers...52% more likely. The AMC also reports that music-makers watch less TV and are more optimistic about their futures than non-music makers.

It is also interesting to note that music making is being found to benefit the seniors as well. A survey of people in their 70’s showed that those who regularly participated in hobbies that were intellectually challenging, like reading or playing a musical instrument, during their younger adult years tended to be protected from Alzheimer’s disease. This research was done by Dr. Robert Friedland, whose study appeared this year in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences. Dr. Zaven Khachaturian, senior medical adviser to the Alzheimer’s Association, said the study is important because it supports other research showing that the onset of Alzheimer’s is delayed by education and by intellectually demanding activities like music making.

  •  NEW: Supervised Practice Classes:

Progress in the study of music, in essence, comes as a result of good student-parent-teacher team-work… balanced partnership. Usually, both parent and teacher recognise the need for daily practicing on an adequate instrument – but our children, that today are under so many different influences, most of the time do not eagerly accept the need for practice. We believe that balancing MUST (practice) and NO (TV, shows, games…) is quite an art and suggest you monitor your child’s practice habits and reward the good sessions by a small gift and time spent with you. While 30 min per day (in the first few years of study) is needed, we are convinced that even 3-4 practice sessions a week will give a good result and ensure the student’s progress! We suggest you seriously consider our specially formulated Supervised Practice Classes where an expert instructor not only helps practice but teaches HOW TO PRACTICE as well as planning – time management and learning strategies. Please enquire about this extremely helpful addition to our program!

  •  Word about the fees & administration:

After comparing the cost of lessons provided by other music schools, we concluded that Forte Academy fees are significantly lower in part due to our hands-on or "do-it-all-yourself" approach and reduced overhead (i.e. no large administrative body). That means that at current fee structure it is not possible to hire strong administrative staff. With increased number of students we are working on improving and easing the registration and payment procedures, however your feedback regarding this matter is important, needed and much appreciated.

As a sign of appreciation for your loyalty, as of September 2003, we are pleased to announce that all students that took classes for 3 full years will pay NO ADMINISTRATION fee any more. One- time $65 fee option remains unchanged.

At the end, we thank you for participating in Forte Academy of Music’s program and invite you to join us for any or all exciting events this semester.

As always, your patronage is much appreciated!

PARTNERSHIP IN DEVELOPING WELL-BALANCED CHILDREN :

Forte Academy of Music & The Academy of Yoshukai Karate

By Sensei Earl Robertson & Boris Hrovat

Two Big "M's": Two after school programs that continually hit high marks for developing sound character and self-confidence in children are Music and Martial arts.

As parents, we want the best for our children.  Typically, we had to make more sacrifices when we grew up than our children do today.  This presents the challenge of how to develop good character in our children and teach them value systems that will mean success in their adult life.

Without the inherent character-builders of ‘walking through 5 miles of snow to get to school’ we often look to our school system to teach lessons of self-determination, personal discipline and perseverance.  Unfortunately, our children’s experiences within the academic community often depend on the ‘luck of the draw’ and getting an enthused teacher that cares about more than our child’s knowledge development.  For this reason, parents have been placing their children in various after-school programs to augment their home and academic experiences.  This too can be a ‘hit and a miss’ as the quality of after school programs can vary greatly.  All too often, parents discover the gap between what the program markets and what it delivers.

Photo showing  sensei Robertson (left) with sensei Betty Gormley and children Jake and Renee with Boris (right) and  Vesna with children  David and Laura.

Two after school programs that continually hit high marks for developing sound character and self-confidence in children are music and martial arts.  This is why the Forte Academy is so pleased to announce an agreement with the Academy of Yoshukai Karate.  The Academy of Yoshukai Karate is entering its 6th year of business in the Clarkson Community (it is located just behind the Forte Academy at the Clarkson ROCK).  Instructors Earl Robertson and Betty Gormley relocated to Clarkson from Montreal in 1996 and opened up their Academy in 1997.  Sensei (Teacher) Robertson is the Canadian Chief Instructor for the Yoshukai International Karate Association and holds a 5th Dan (degree) Black Belt and a Shihan (Master Instructor) license.  Sensei Robertson has been teaching for 30 years and has produced many provincial, national and international champions.

In Canada since 1994, Dr. Boris V. Hrovat, founder, and music director of the Forte Academy of Music is proudly continuing rich family music tradition that continues for 4 generations now. Indulged in music since his early age of 5, coached by some of the most respected instructors of his homeland Dr. Boris V. Hrovat is medical professional that holds both teachers and performers degree in music. After over 20 years of teaching and performing in Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Austria, Poland, Germany, UK and USA, Boris, supported by wife Vesna, Academy Instructor and Education Coordinator admits to have his heart set on sharing his passion and appreciation of music through their very own Clarkson Piano Centre & Forte Academy of Music. "Dedicated to Success in Music and in- Life" proudly symbolizes the ideals, goals, values and - responsibilities of the quality teaching music program towards the excellence in music and in life What has attracted the Forte Academy to this partnership is a common value system.  The Academy of Yoshukai Karate’s focus is on developing good character and community values in their students.  The philosophy of the Academy is to ‘Build Life Champions’.  With their own two children (8 and 10 years old) in the program, the Academy has a strong family presence with instructors and many students’ families participating together.

Of interest to our members may be that the Martial Arts’ Instructors children take music lessons at the Forte Academy and the Forte Academy Instructor’s children take lessons at the martial arts school. Combined, Music and Martial Arts training requires and improves self-discipline, concentration, problem-solving, attention; teaches the laws of particles; builds creativity, poise, self-confidence, self-esteem, coordination and self-efficacy. There is no better way to help your children prepare for life than benefits of music and physical skills of self-defence.

Forte Academy members interested in taking martial arts classes may contact Sensei Robertson at: (905) 601-2880 or via e-mail at: iaito@symaptico.ca

Shihan Earl Robertson (black belt, 5th dan) is a chief-instructor (Honbu-Cho) of Yoshukai International Karate Association - Canada. During Sensei Roberton's extensive career, he has published two books on martial arts, hosted and produced a national television show, Community Self-Defence and given seminars in Japan, Norway, Iceland, Germany, the USA and across Canada. His system of self-defence has been replicated widely and he personally has taught over 2000 police recruits in his career. (B.H.)

Members joining the Academy of Yoshukai Karate will receive an additional 10% off their membership when they notify the instructor they are members of the Forte Academy of Music!  One more step to developing well-balanced children.

Dear students, parents, friends and visitors,
Clarkson Piano Centre & Forte Academy of Music will be holding its traditional

WINTER RECITAL

On Saturday, DECEMBER 13th, 2003 , starting at 12.30 pm, at the comfortable and acoustically attractive setting of the Mississauga's Living Arts Centre - Rogers Theatre. Living arts Centre is located at:

4141 Living Arts Drive
Mississauga, ON L5B 4B8
Tel: (905) 306-6100
Fax: (905) 306-6101

We would like to ask students and parents to arrive at least 15 min. prior to the Recital in order to be seated and prepared for the performance. Students are asked to play one piece each, but may play another with their teacher’s permission. Student performances will be followed by "Our Musical Gift To You" a short guest performance. Anticipated duration of each recital is 45-55 minutes. As always, there will be no participant fee or tickets charged to our students, family or visitors. At this time, we are delighted to introduce Forte Academy of Music Certificate of Achievement that will be presented to each student during the Summer Recitals, in recognition of the effort, commitment and hard work demonstrated throughout the Academic Year.

Our Recitals are family and community events beneficial to all: By participating at the Recital, students are offered the opportunity to improve their musicianship while learning how to overcome the pressure of public performance by building and improving those valuable skills such as concentration, self-esteem and self-confidence. The Academy is further demonstrating its positive, supportive goals by providing the performance opportunity in an inspiring and non-competitive environment. We, at Clarkson Piano Centre & Forte Academy of Music truly believe that recitals, festival & exam performances are very important components of a successful music-training program and we will continue to emphasize the importance of those challenging yet beneficial and rewarding performances before the public. Therefore, we encourage all students who could possibly perform to participate - even a simple, easy piece with (or without) the help of the book will do it! The supportive and appreciative audience is the best we can offer to our students - and we look forward to seeing you, your family and friends all there.

Special greetings and best wishes to all participants for the forthcoming performance! And remember: recitals are completely non-competitive events. Try your best! Be proud of yourself, because you've done it! To all students that will take part in upcoming RCM Examination Session we extend our best wishes and remain available for any exam-related question!

Please note that the next, SUMMER Recital's date is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, May 29th 2004.  Winter Recital's date (School Year 2004/2005) will be confirmed in early November, 2004.

Musically Yours,
Boris Hrovat, family & staff
