A Message from Boris: On behalf of all of us at Forte Academy of Music, I invite you to take part in preparation and completion of a music (instrumental or vocal) examination with Royal Conservatory of Music Examinations. Students who use the curriculum of The Royal Conservatory of Music are following a well-balanced course of study, internationally recognized for more then one hundred years.

The self-discipline developed by setting and working towards the goal of an examination will be valuable in all other aspects of a student's life. The positive and constructive feedback received after each examination is designed to contribute to a student's sense of accomplishment and to help setting future goals. As your local RCM Examination preparation centre, we look forward to making the examination experience a positive one for students, parents and us - teachers! If you have any questions about RCM Examinations and the examination system, do not hesitate to contact me by calling 905.855.1030 or by visiting us at 1739 lakeshore Rd.W., Clarkson,  Mississauga. WELCOME!

The Royal Conservatory of Music curriculum is one of the best designed and most comprehensive programs that incorporates ALL that is essential to develop skilled musicianship.  Behind the RCM curriculum is over a century of experience, generations of students and teams of finest educators in constant search for THE BEST in the musical educational field. In simple terms, Canadian, Royal Conservatory of Music program is a true hallmark of the quality music education, recognized coast-to-coast and internationally, the only program that offers high-school credits, tax and RESP benefits. Most of all- we are convinced that the RCM program is well-structured, comprehensive  teaching program that successfully balances the values of the traditional music instruction with the expanded needs of the 21st century student.

RCM Examinations are internationally recognized as a system of evaluation that enables students, teachers and parents to measure a student's progress within a time-tested framework.  We strongly encourage our students and parents to get involved with RCM examinations and experience long-term values and benefits of that rewarding process.

At the Forte Academy of Music we are SPECIALIZED in assisting students at ALL levels of RCM curriculum to prepare for RCM exams.  And, in constant effort to offer more, we will support, by all means, students that show any interest in additional, contemporary study; Modern Jazz & Improvisation, MIDI technology etc.

By completing the entire RCM curriculum, students are transformed into mature music professionals, ready to further master their music education, or pursue music CAREER OPPORTUNITIES.

CLASSICAL TRAINING MEANS - POPULAR TUNES ARE FORBIDDEN?  NO WAY with Forte Academy of Music & The ROYAL CONSERVATORY OF MUSIC CURRICULUM:

We are very pleased to announce the introduction of a Popular Selection List for EXAMINATION PURPOSES, as well as for fun!  The popular selection list is a compilation of non-classical pieces carefully selected to suit each grade level. RCM examination candidates in grades 3 to 9 will have the option of  substituting   a piece chosen from the Popular Selection List with one study in these grades.

Each Popular Selection List piece addresses the musical and/or technical aspects of playing the piano relevant to the level and similar to a study while providing the fun of performing current melodies.  Ranging from movie themes to pop tunes, and ragtime to jazz standards, these pieces are also suitable for a performance - in recitals, for friends and for family.

What a fun way of supporting the piano study; by blending the traditional study with the opportunity to play carefully arranged and challenging popular piano pieces. Try it now!

Do you know what these  three great artists have in common...

We teach RCM  Program.

Glenn Gould...

Oscar Peterson and

Elton John...?

All three originally received a serious classical piano training. While it is no surprise that world-renowned pianist, Glenn Gould famous for his interpretations of J.S.Bach's works is a graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music, Toronto - International Jazz-legend, Canadian jazz super-star, Oscar Peterson is originally classically trained at Conservatory Canada. Elton John, a pop-music icon is a seriously classically trained musician that has a lot of fun (and success) in popular music world. He graduated from the Royal Conservatory, London (UK). Many more rock, jazz or pop stars - like members of British legendary rock-band QUEEN...to Billy Joel, David Foster, Diana Krall to name a few - originally received a solid classical training...

So in our teaching, we emphasize the importance of classical training that combines a necessary instrumental repertoire, technical requirements with ear-training, sight-reading and necessary theory instructions for fuller and broader understanding of music - classical, popular, easy-listening, rock'n'roll - or whatever !

Our program, based on the RCM curriculum, is very carefully crafted and is quite different from what one might think is - a classical training. All of us, teachers at the FORTE Academy of Music beside our dedication to classics, enjoy playing contemporary, modern music with many teachers actively performing. We invite you to hear and see what we do!   To "spice up" the repertoire and the study, we gladly blend modern tunes and tunes from a "Popular Selection List " - a comprehensive well-crafted selection that offers a fantastic songs/pieces to satisfy the wide range of musical interests-from Broadway, ragtime, blues, swing, jazz, pop, to easy-listening and more.

TOP TEN EXAMINATION TIPS - From the Office of the Chief Examiners

After every examination session, RCM Examinations receives feedback from members of the College of Examiners on common examination pitfalls which they encounter while examining, and which can cause candidates added stress and anxiety Here is a "top ten" list of tips which may help to better prepare candidates for their examinations and to ensure that there are no surprises during the examination:

1. Starting at the Grade 3 Piano level, candidates must prepare TWO studies/etudes for the examination, not just one, as is the case in Grades 1 and 2.

2. In Grades 3-9 Piano, candidates using a piece from the Popular Selection List are only permitted to use it to substitute for a study/etude from the Celebration Series®, the Piano Odyssey®, Piano Studies/Etudes album. A piece from the Popular Selection List CANNOT be used to substitute for a List A, B, C, or D repertoire piece.

3. Candidates for disciplines requiring an accompanist are required to bring TWO original copies of their music to the examination, Candidates for all other disciplines are required to bring at least one original copy of their music to the examination. Photocopied music is not permitted in the examination room, unless permission has been obtained from the publisher Please consult a current syllabus for detailed photocopying policies.

4. Candidates should ensure that they are preparing for their examination using the current syllabi. A list of syllabi in effect is available on RCM website under "Academic Information".

5. Candidates should double check that they are preparing one piece from each List in their grade. The current syllabi should be consulted for detailed information on examination requirements. This will ensure that candidates do not come to their examination prepared with two List A pieces and no List B piece.

6, Candidates are only allowed to substitute one repertoire piece from the next grade level higher, not two pieces. Please consult the current syllabus for detailed information on substitution policies.

7. Candidates should be prepared to play both parts of a two-part study/etude, if applicable. Instructions for this requirement may be found in the Piano Studies/Etudes alburns. For example, in Grade I Piano, the Study #5, Martellato and Forte-Piano, by Lajos Papp, are to be played as one selection.

8. For Voice examinations, candidates should be prepared for all the language requirements for their grade level. For example, in Grades 6 and 7 Voice, candidates must prepare one song in a language other than English. In Grades 8 and 9, candidates must prepare at least two songs in a language other than English, and in Grade 10, candidates must prepare at least three songs in a language other than English.

9. For Voice examinations, candidates should prepare the correct number of Vocalises. For example, candidates in Grade 5 are required to prepare one vocalise, candidates in Grades 6 -10 must prepare two vocalises,

10. For Orchestral Instruments examinations, candidates should prepare all of the required Orchestral Excerpts and Studies for their respective grade levels
