Everyone
would love to have a grand piano even people that don't play are wishing one
in their home- however, the answer to this question will depend on the space
and money you have available and on your playing requirements.
Grand
Piano's appearance makes it a desirable choice, so if you are looking to
purchase one, here we offer you some introductory points: |

|
|

|
The action of a
grand piano generally allows for faster repetition of notes and for better,
more subtle control of expression and tone than does a vertical action.
Also, the horizontal construction of a
grand allows the tone to develop and distribute in a more pleasing
manner. |
|
 |
In a vertical, the sound
tends to bounce right back into the performer's face, or else remains boxed
in. For these reasons, the grand piano is always the choice for those that
appreciate tonal, and action/touch advantages a grand piano offers |
|
 |
A grand
piano may need more space for aesthetic reasons than a mere measuring of the
instrument would indicate.
In fact, if
properly positioned, baby-grand piano can easily fit in most rooms.
|
- IMPORTANT: Both grands
and verticals come in a number of sizes. The height of a vertical
piano is measured from the floor to the top of the piano. The length
of a grand is measured from the very front of the keyboard end of the
piano to the very back of the piano, with the lid closed.

Grand pianos designed for home use have enjoyed an increase in popularity in
recent years. Today, market offers grand pianos 4' 7" and up. Most Grand
Pianos we carry are 5-foot long (and up) - those added extra inches
provide better tone and better, stronger construction. |
| |
| if
space is a major consideration, we can offer you a paper pattern
('template") on the floor to measure - you may be pleasantly surprised to
find you have room for a grand piano! 4'11" to 5'3" Grand Pianos (Baby -
Grand or Music Room Grand Pianos) have a pleasant tone, and are the most
popular sizes for most homes today. |
| |
|
5' 5" - 5" 8" are considered as Medium Grand Pianos or Lounge Grand
Pianos and offer pleasant, richer tone. Six foot Grand Piano often
called - Recital Grand or Conservatory Grand offers great tone,
full and rich, and are the popular choice for piano teachers and serious
players. The largest grands in the seven to nine foot category are used
primarily by a serious pianist or for public performance, and are found in
concert halls, churches and auditoriums. |
| |
|
 |
Again, The Grand Piano- Comes in
varying lengths, from 4'5" - 4'10" (petite), 4'11" - 5'4" (baby), 5'4" -
5'7" (medium), 5'9" - 6'1" (living room, lounge), 7' (ballroom or
semi-concert grand), and 9' (concert). Distinctive shape and design make
Grand Piano the most prized piano of all. May be placed anywhere in a
room. Grand piano equally enriches the room if placed alone or
complementing the existing furniture. Grand pianos come in a wide variety of
styles and finishes. The contemporary cabinet style, with straight leg (as
pictured above) is the most desirable and best selling cabinet style.
Quality Grand Piano has the best tone projection and more responsive key
action, as the action on Grand Pianos works with the force of gravity.

To review
- both grands and verticals come in a number of sizes. The height of a

- Grand Pianos: Concert Grand 8 1/2 -

|
The names and sizes listed above are
quite general and there is some overlapping between them. Vertical piano
types are defined not only by their height, as shown above, but also by
the kinds of action they have (which tend to vary with the size). This is
important— please contact us for detailed explanation of different types
of piano-actions. Note that old pianos labelled "upright grand" or "cabinet
grand" are often still strong, "promising" upright pianos that, if well
restored often deliver rich, big tone. The size of a piano is probably
the single most important factor influencing its tonal quality. The longer
strings, particularly in the bass section, and the greater soundboard area
of the larger sizes of grands and verticals result in greater volume and
resonance of tone and in a harmonic content that is most pleasing to the
listener. The smaller the piano, the worse the tonal quality, especially
in the lower bass, and also in the tenor, just above the bass.
An additional factor,
though, makes the question of size even more important: because the tonal
quality of small pianos tends to be poor, the people who buy these pianos
are usually more interested in the styling and looks of the case than in the
quality of the instrument inside the case. Therefore, the manufacturers
invest more of their money in the appearance of the instrument than in its
quality. The result is that, quite apart from any effects of acoustical
laws, smaller pianos are often more poorly built than larger ones. |
|
space and
money were no obstacle, we would place the different types and sizes of
piano in the following order of preference: |
|
 |
|
The
placement of a particular small grand in this list would depend on its size
and quality. While most grands have longer strings and larger soundboards
than most verticals, some larger verticals may surpass some smaller grands
in these respects and for this and other reasons may be better instruments. |
|
Unless
your ceilings are only four feet high, "lack of space" is not a valid reason
for getting a small vertical, since the only difference in size between
small and large verticals is their height, not the floor space they occupy. |
|
Spinets have been placed at the bottom of the list, not only because of
their small size and generally lower quality, but also because their action
is inaccessible and hard to service. Please contact us to learn more about
different types of upright pianos. |
|
If you can, buy a grand piano at least 5 feet
long, or a vertical 45 - 52 inches tall. |
